Background and Experience
I moved to a pound in Auckland in late 2019, when I was about 3-4 weeks old, with my litter mates and mum. Helen saw a photo of me on Facebook on a rescue page when I was 4 months old, and fell in love with me. She had to wait until the first lockdown lifted to level 2, before she could drive up from Napier and collect me from a fosterer. I was 6 months old and a skinny, leggy, 10kg puppy, with the smoothest coat you could imagine, and a tiny bit of a beard.
Over the next 18 months, I grew a thick, wiry mohawk from the nape of my neck to the tip of my tail, and a more obvious beard. Then I developed more wiry hairs on my legs and shoulders. And in October 2025, I surprised everyone by sprouting bushy grey eyebrows.
I’m a great conversation starter (What is he? Did you shave him like that?) and I love running games, as long as I am always at the front and I am the fastest. I also like to play a game they call, ‘Hyena in the bushes’. My favourite humans are Kate and Dan Baker from Kate’s Canine Cadets, and Augusta Grayson from Proactive Canine Training. Helen says that these people are the only reason I’ve become a semi-decent member of society.
Helen got me pet insurance immediately on my arrival, and since I like to climb every mountain and ford every stream, at speed, on repeat, she’s never regretted it. I have a congenital spinal problem, which keeps Helen challenged, both as a physiotherapist and as the owner of a high-drive dog who does NOT like to be on restricted exercise.
